What is Home?
This was an illustration made as an editorial piece on how foster kids who aged out of the foster care system during covid were struggling. I later on adjusted the piece to reflect my own experiences in the foster care system.
My original concept was having the kid be cramped with a lot of their belongings since in foster care space is often an issue.
This was the initial sketch. I had never done an editorial styled illustration before so I wasn’t sure if it would make more sense to render it more painterly or flat and I decided to go with my usual painterly style despite more editorial work looking more flat and blocky.
This was the final image I turned in, the background representing covid being all around and forcing people to stay inside. Meanwhile, foster kids who are aging out of the system are often pushed out of their homes to start their life in a world stacked against them.
